Resilience
A wisp of smoke
climbs through the air,
holding itself together as long as it can,
knowing that it’s just biding time
until it must dissipate.
Perception of Depth
So much violence
tearing its way through the depths,
so much life that remains
unobserved and unremarked upon,
hidden from the sun
that bounces off of its surface
and shows only the reflection
of anyone who bothers
to try and look within,
so that ultimately
even if they do manage
to peer deep enough to view
the life roiling beneath,
they can only see it
playing out within themselves.
In Spite of it All
The dying old man
continues to scrub
the dead skin off of his back,
from the hardest to reach places,
in full view
even as the world burns.
